What makes a community

You might ask, what makes a community? Well, people make a community in are case. People that share the same interest in something make up a community. You may be 4'11 and another person may be 7'2 but you both "Love" the color blue, so technically you both are part of a community in a way.
Same goes for people online. for example I am part of plenty of communities on the web like millions of others. here goes a few.
MYSPACE
ESPN
GOOGLE
YAHOO
HOTMAIL

AS LONG AS YOU HAVE A COMMON INTEREST WITH OTHER PEOPLE THAT IS A COMMUNITY EVEN IF ITS ONLINE. THERE IS SO MUCH IN COMMON WITH ONLINE COMMUNITIES AND PHYSICAL COMMUNITIES!

Dot.com to dot.Bomb

From the "Prodigy dinosaur" everything went SOUTH. I don't understand how something like this could get so animated and blow up. It just seems creepy since I was unaware of this occurring.

Buying Online

I think online buying is good I don't see how it can be dangerous. II don't think you can ever be 100 percent careful when purchasing things over the Internet, its easier shopping I purchased a phone from Tmobile three weeks ago, It made me a bit nervous paying for it with my debit card, but I have been with the company for 4 years, and haven’t had a problem with my card beforeCraigs lists gives you the opportunity to communicate with your buyers/sellers. You can get pictures, and bid for that items purchase price to be dropped. If you haven’t tried buying something online, you may consider giving it a try.

Book Review

The book I choose to read is World Without Secrets.
This book explains how the future moving us towards a world of ever-present computing-a world in which we are surrounded by smart machines that are constantly on, always aware, and always monitoring us. These developments will create a world virtually without secrets in which information is widely available and analyzable worldwide. This environment will certainly affect business, government, and the individual alike, dramatically affecting the way organizations and individuals interact. This book explores the implications of the coming world and suggests and explores policy options that can protect individuals and organizations from exploitation and safeguard the implicit contract between employees, businesses, and society itself.

Should be interesting to read.

Kevin Freteis

Well, we had another guest speaker. Kevin Freteis, is a NW native graduate of PLU. Senior web developer, site drafting in Tacoma. He was the 6th person hired there, now they have 15. They do business with artist, government, home developers etc...

What was cool to me about Mr. Frateis is that he has his own website. It is so unique. kevinfreitas.net The reason why he set up his website was to get out emotions, thoughts. He has been blogging for just about ten years. He uses his real name, no nick names.
This website allows others to blog, post pictures, use web cam, has calendar. So much stuff that it should cost money to use lol.
Check out the pictures when you go to the site, there amazing!!!!!

Another cool thing that Kevin has going is feedtacoma.com This site give valuable information about what is going on in Tacoma. He gets some help from others that post events, they get alot of traffic going through. Look at the comments that are made, they can be anything that occurs in the area. One may comment on a restaurant that they went to, or something they seen.
Tacoma has had a bad rep, but this site shows the good that Tacoma has.

Check it out!!!

"All About Your Name "

When I went online and typed in my name this is what I found out about it:

Origin:
If not synonymous with Parry, it is local, from Pierre (French), a stone, signifying a stony place, abounding in rocks.

27% of the letters are vowels. Of one million first and last names we looked at, 87.6% have a higher vowel make-up. This means you are poorly envoweled.

  1. Backwards, it is Dnomal Yrrep... nice ring to it, huh?
  2. In Pig Latin, it is Amondlay Errypay.
  3. In ASCII binary it is...

People with this first name are probably: Male or female... We don't know yet. We're working on it!

3 things you didn't know:

  1. Your personal power animal is the Colombian Cougar
  2. Your 'Numerology' number is 6. If it wasn't bulls**t, it would mean that you are responsible, careful, and compassionate. A giver, you are there to support and care for the most vulnerable.
  3. According to the US Census Bureau°, fewer than 0.001% of US residents have the first name and 0.094% have the surname 'Perry'. The US has around 300 million residents, so we guesstimate there are 0

TacomaGnome

On Wednesday October 18th we had a guess speaker. This guess speaker was not the ordinary person that you would expect to show up to give a presentation. Well, technically he didn't say nothing at all, but he does have a blog, myspace, and a large amount of friends. Now your probably thinking he is death or has some kind of disability but thats not the case either. We had a Gnome come in. Guess speaker October 18th

In class of Wednesday we had guess speakers: I don't want to put this persons user name out there so we will just call them T-ME-Tac,

T- me- Tac, has spent 10 years in media, as of now works for the city. All their blogs are about the city; the legacy of the city of destiny (which is Tacoma if you didn't know) and the events that occur annually. This blogger tries to put something up as much as they can.
The reason why they started blogging was because of families legacy here in Tacoma.
As this blogger was speaking he/she really caught my attention when she said that she doesn't want to be googled up on the internet, so he/she has to be really careful on what she says upon certain situations. He or she says" be careful on what you say because it can offend people and they can find out information upon you, if they look in the right spot."

My Results of Vanity Search!!!

After we had class of Wednesday I began to think about how scary it really is, to find your personal information on the internet. Meaning that if you can find it, ANY ONE CaN!!! I went to goggle.com, and typed in some sites that I know I participated in throughout the years, and sure enough my pictures appeared. I went to myspace and did a search and sure enough again information appeared, but I wasn't surprised about the results from myspace. I then went to zilla.com and typed in my address, and a map appeared with estimates of my house and neighborhood. That is really creepy. Just that makes me realize that there is a whole lot more information that can be discovered if you look hard and in the right place.

Besides it being kinda scary, it was kinda of fun, to see my name appear on the internet. I don't think its a bad thing to have information about you to be viewed as long as those that view it, don't do any harm. Now a days though, you can not be to careful, but the rout that I'm taking, everyone will know about me, I plan to be very successful, so I just have to hope that everything falls in place and my identity and information is used accordingly.

Vanity Search

I found myself on the web as number one on the list. This site most of us college students go to two tothree times a day. MYSPACE. It may not seem like alot, but atleast im at the top when i hit the search. lol When I type in my email address at hotmail, blogger, yahoo in the search bar I came up to, doesnt beat being number one though.

Other than that there are people with the same name as me that are doctors, writers. This one doctor with the same name as me lives in Isreal, and they did a big investigation on him for perfoming an operation on someone after he was on sleeping pills. Seemed kinda of interesting.
What did you guys come up with?

Yesturday I typed in my address at yahoo, and it pulled up a map, and give me an estimate of how much it is worth. Has anyone done that?

Detroit Pistons

For you basketball lovers out there you will enjoy this blog.
This coming season will be an exacting one, with superstars coming into the league fresh out of college.
Rodney Stuckey from Eastern Washington University: now with the Detroit Pistons
Kevin Durant from Texas University; now with the Seattle Super Sonics
Greg Odem from Ohio State University: now with the Portland Trail Blazers. (injured)
Al Green from Georgetown University: now with the Seattle Super Sonics

Detroit has a four starters returning this year that have been on the All Star Team before. They were close to playing San Antonio for the Championship last season. Chancy Billups has a up hill battle to prove on the court after receiving a new contract. With the edition of "Hot Rod" Stuckey shooting the three Detroit has a Good chance of going to the promise land and taking the title home back to the Palace of Auburn Hill. Experience together, talent, and hard work will bring them to glory, and give me bragging rights.

Detroit selected Rodney Stuckey of Eastern Washington in the first round. Stuckey has got good size at 6′5″, 205 pounds and he can get the ball in the basket. Stuckey played in 59 games at Eastern Washington and he averaged 24.4 points, 4.7 rebounds, 4.8 assists and 2.3 steals per game. He also is a good shooter from anywhere on the basketball court as he hit 47.2% from the floor, 31.7% from the three point line and 80.6% from the free throw line in college. If Billups leaves, the Pistons might start Stuckey at point guard. If Billups returns, look for the Pistons to use Stuckey like they used to use Vinnie “Microwave” Johnson off of the bench.

Mr. Mark Briggs

On October 11, 2007 we had the privilege of having Mark Briggs come down from The Tacoma News and speak to us about his accomplishments to the paper and in general, about their website, and paper.

Mr. Briggs is the editor of the news tribune.com; he has worked in new media for the paper since 2000. Two years ago he started training classes for blogs, videos, the class was called how to be digital. He takes much credit for a co-worker that received a job after from ESPN for writing blogs about the Seattle Seahawks. Mark gave him the job to do to on the side, and sure enough he enjoyed every minute of it. Theses blogs and plenty more can be seen online at their website.

Besides the blogs, you are able to read the news that is posted in the original paper. Mr. Brigg mentioned that he feels that the newspaper onlining is behind, so there at the tribune they try new things out. For example they have a reported that never comes into the building unless told to do so. He or she goes out and reports what the people think right off the street and he post what he thinks may be a reasonable topic from his laptop, straight to the blog/website. Mark mentioned as well that it is good to have a degree in journalism, if you want to work for the company, then went out and hired a UWT student that did an internship with them. Mark says he didn’t know how the others would react to him, or if they would say anything to him, not knowing what his capabilities are. But all turned well for the fellow and the Tribune. Using the Tribune online is very beneficial to me, you can connect to different sites from theirs, highlight key information, and most of all don’t have to throw any bundles away, unless you print it out lol.

I learned quite a bit from Mr. Briggs about the Tribune. Have you guys looked up his book getting a clear summary? I might just do that today!!!!!

Comparison

For those that do not know, the internet is blooming as we speak with new data, and pretty soon it may take over the original ways of finding information. The movies that we watched in class, made me really think about life in that aspect of a virtual world. Until I got into this class I never took the time out to make inquiries and observe how much the internet really is beneficial compared to the original methods of getting valuable information. Well, right now I am going to compare /contrast the internet and print.

When using the internet you are able to access valuable information in a timely manner. If you wanted to send a message to a friend that lives/ works in Afghanistan that you never get to see only on Christmas, all you need is that person or businesses email address and they will receive it that day, and you didn’t even have to pay for a stamp, over night delivery, or an international call. With a computer you can make and receive invitations, post cards for special occasions, print out billing statements, make payments, create a calendar and manage it , buy/sell things online, look up research projects, make/ observe pamphlets. The internet is a valuable tool to encompass, but having the old style of ways of doing things is still alright, some may argue that it is the best way to go period.

Sending off a hand written message or post card through the mail service to a friend that lives far away that you don’t get to articulate to that often enables you to sit down and think about what you really want to say to this person, where in the internet you can move at a way faster pace. Having regular mail, postcards, and bills delivered to your residency I guess, gives you time to think when the mail deliverer will come with what you are waiting for. Not using the internet when it comes to buying things just means that you have to go out and get that merchandise, which may be a better rout to go, since then you will be able to look at what you want to buy, ask questions to a human being face to face, you as well get to make your payment in person, you now how a lower chance of getting any of your personal information received by a complete stranger.

I personally believe that the internet is the best way to go, when it comes to communicating, paying/ shopping and researching. Having the internet for school really is beneficial; it sure beats the hell out of copying out of a book for facts. I am open ears to learn about the internet and how it is growing. Here goes a question to all of you; if the internet takes over do you think that businesses will run through the web, not in person any longer?
